The San Francisco Section is one of ten sectional members of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), the governing body for high school interscholastic athletics in California. The San Francisco Section entered the CIF in 1945 with its members being both public and private high schools in San Francisco, all of whom were also members of the Academic Athletic Association (AAA). The AAA began as the San Francisco Athletic League (SFAL) in 1914. In 1925 the name was changed to the Academic Athletic Association. Over the years, the private school members left the AAA to join other leagues in both the Central Coast Section (CCS) and the North Coast Section (NCS) with the current membership of the AAA comprised of 12 SFUSD public high schools. Until 2007, AAA member schools were also the only members of the San Francisco Section. Beginning with the 2007-08 school year, the San Francisco Section began accepting, once again, non-SFUSD school members. Currently the SF Section has accepted one new member school, Metro Charter. Metro is an affiliated member and has not yet joined the AAA league. San Francisco Section champions travel throughout the state to compete against students from the furthest reaches of California in cross country, golf, football, girls volleyball, wrestling, basketball, tennis, and track. In addition to the above mentioned sports, the 13 high schools also participate in the following sectional sports: soccer, boys volleyball, spirit squad, badminton, baseball, fencing, gymnastics, softball, and swimming.
