MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS
ANOTHER MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETICS SEASON IS COMPLETE!
The 2021-22 AAA Middle School interscholastic athletic season has come to an end. It was a welcome sight to see all out school teams and athletes back in action after a nearly two year break due to the covid pandemic. Hopefully the improved health of all will continue and 2022-23 will be an even bigger and brighter year for our middle school sports program. But for now, enjoy a wonderful summer break, and we'll see you all back here in the fall for more action on the fields, tracks, and in the gym!

PANTHERS TAKE TRACK TEAM TITLE...ONCE AGAIN
The AAA Middle School Track season concluded April 29 with the All-City Meet finals at Kezar Stadium. And after a two year hiatus due to the covid pandemic, Presidio picked up right where they left off recording a resounding win in the team category amassing a whopping 533 points. Giannini was a distant second at 227.5 followed by Marina in third place with 218. Three individual records were set at this year's meet with Presidio's Girls 4x100 meter relay squad setting a new best time of 56.41, Carmichael's Nico Johnson winning the Boys 100 meter dash at 12.70, and Olivia Sanchez of Presidio taking the Girls 400 meters with a time of 1:04.18. Congratulations to the Panther squad on their 17th straight team title and to all athletes and schools on a very entertaining All-City meet and successful overall seasons! |
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TITLE GOES TO THE RED DRAGONS
The AAA Middle School Girls Volleyball final took place February 28 at Kezar Pavilion with Alice Fong Yu downing Lawton 2-1 earning their first ever title. The Red Dragons took the first set 25-14, however the Lions rallied to win the second set 25-17 and even the match. That left a third set to decide the victor where Alice Fong Yu jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 15-4 final set score and with that possession of the champions plaque. The annual Flo Hyman awards were also presented to the most outstanding player from each squad. The Red Dragons Katherine Chan and Lions Gianna Galarza earned the honors. Both are pictured above with their school principals and Commissioner Gail Barksdale. Congratulations to our first time champion Alice Fong Yu and to Lawton as well on a very exciting final and successful overall seasons.

PANTHERS TAKE GOLD IN GIRLS HOOPS
The AAA Middle School Girls Basketball championship took place December 14 at Kezar Pavilion with Presidio downing Giannini 47-26. The Lady Panthers completed the doubleheader sweep of the Jaguars squads after the boys victory in game one of the championships (see story below). Presidio jumped out to a 10-0 first quarter lead and never looked back, earning the top spot for 2021 and the Richmond District school their 13th title overall. Congratulations to both schools on a very successful return to the court after the pandemic hiatus year. |
PANTHERS MAUL JAGUARS FOR BOYS HOOPS TITLE
The AAA Middle School Boys Basketball final was held December 14 at Kezar Pavilion with Presidio knocking off Giannini 52-38. The Panthers came out on fire from the opening tip and never let the Jaguars gain any momentum in coasting to the victory. The win completed an undefeated season for Presidio and their sixth overall hoops title. Congratulations to the Panthers, and to Giannini as well, on a very success return to the hardwood after the lost year due to Covid. |
TIGERS TOP JAGUARS FOR GIRLS SOCCER TITLE
The AAA Middle School Girls Soccer championship took place December 7 with Aptos slipping past Giannini 1-0 at Burton HS. The match was scoreless through half number one. The deadlock was broken in the 42nd minute when the Tigers Arianna Torres blasted a shot from about 20 yards out that ricocheted off the crossbar landing just over the goal line. It turned out to be Aptos only shot of the game and only goal as well. The Jaguars put on some big pressure as the clock wound down, but were held at bay by the Tiger defense sealing the win. Congratulations to Aptos on their title and to Giannini as well on a very exciting game and successful overall season! |
JAGUARS CLAW THEIR WAY TO BASEBALL TITLE
The AAA Middle School baseball final was held October 7 at West Sunset Field with Giannini besting Presidio 3-2 in 8 innings. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Jaguars pushed across two runs on two hits and a Panthers error. The score remained 2-0 through five innings. In the top of the sixth, Presidio tied it up with two hits and a couple walks. Neither team could break the deadlock in the seventh, and the game headed to extra innings. The Panthers had a runner reach third on a double and fly out, however couldn't bring him home. In the bottom of the eight the Jaguars loaded the bases with one out and then thought they had won the game on a ground ball to short, however the runner from second was called out for interfering with the fielder. The bases remained loaded, but now there were two outs. Giannini, however, was not to be denied as the next batter was hit by a pitch forcing in the winning run and bringing the Sunset District school the title and their 20th overall! Congratulations to both teams on a great season and for providing the large crowd with a very exciting championship. |
BULLDOGS BEST OWLS FOR BOYS SOCCER TITLE
The AAA Middle School Boys Soccer championship took place October 6 at Boxer Stadium with James Lick slipping past Everett 3-2. The Bulldogs took a quick 1-0 lead on a 9th minute goal from Jazer Umanzor and extended the lead to 2-0 when Umanzor found the back of the net again in the 24th minute. In the second half the Owls came out on fire with Luis Addicott putting Everett on the board in the 32nd minute. Then a Lick own goal off a short cross in the 41st minute tied the match. Both teams continued a frenetic pace until the deadlock was broken in the 37th minute by the Bulldogs Jonah Dorantes as he hit the top corner with a strike from outside the 18 yard box. The Owls fought back, but eventually ran out of steam. The final whistle blew after about two minutes of stoppage time giving Lick the title! Congratulations to both schools on a very exciting final and successful seasons overall. |
PANTHERS ON TOP IN GIRLS SOFTBALL
