FONG YU DEFEATS HOOVER FOR VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
An exciting AAA Middle School Volleyball season wrapped up on Feb. 27, with Fong Yu taking on Hoover for the championship. The first set was fiercely competitive, with several lead changes, before the Red Dragons closed out to take set-1 25-20. The Hawks entered the second set more determined than ever, edging out to an early lead and stringing together several rallies for points. However, Fong Yu found its footing and was able to surge to a 25-23 win in set-2 to take the title. 8th-grade outside hitter Angie Lee won the prestigious Flo Hyman award for the Red Dragons, while her counterpart, Melrose Lam, took home the honors for the runner-up Hawks. Congrats to both teams on an impressive match and fantastic seasons. |
SECOND HALF SURGE GIVES PRESIDIO BOYS AAA HOOPS TITLE
The finale at Kezar Pavilion on Dec. 13 was the Boys' Final between Lilienthal and Presidio, which resulted in 46-42 thriller to give the Panthers their second straight AAA Boys Basketball City Championship. The Wolves got off to a sizzling start, led by a dazzling performance from 8th grade guard Daejon Mayfield, who finished with 28 points to lead all scorers. However, Presidio settled in in the second half to overtake Lilienthal's halftime lead, thanks to a balanced attack that saw 8th grade guard Darren Dazalla-Dizon chip in 12 points, and 8th grade guard Preston Wong and 8th grade forward John O'Neil both finishing with 11 points. The victory earned Presidio its 3rd championship in the past 7 AAA Boys Basketball seasons. Congrats to both teams on outstanding seasons and an outstanding championship game! |
PRESIDIO WINS GIRLS 2022 BASKETBALL CITY CHAMPIONSHIP
In a matchup of two well-coached teams and programs responsible for the last 7 AAA Girls Basketball championships, the Presidio Panthers defeated the Alice Fong Yu Red Dragons 45-38 to win the 2022 title. A great crowd was on hand at Kezar Pavilion, including an appearance by the Panthers' school mascot. The star of the show was Presidio 8th grade guard Olivia Sanchez, who finished with 20 points, including 13 in the first half. She was helped by 7th grade guard Logan Lau's 10 points, and 6th grade guard Kate Tu finished with 8. The Red Dragons were led by 7th grade post-player Athena Carroll's 18 points and fellow front-court player Kosi Anibuko's 16. Congrats to both teams on fantastic seasons! |
GIANNINI WINS GIRLS SOCCER TITLE
The AAA Middle School Girls Soccer Championship took place December 6 at Burton HS featuring the AP Giannini Jaguars and Presidio Panthers. Both teams flexed their defensive prowess and strong backlines early on, with 8th grade Giannini goalkeeper Kriska Quach making several key saves in the first half and putting on a brilliant performance throughout. As time wore on and the score tied 0-0, it was 8th grade Jaguars forward Kelilah Spirn who broke the tie on a free kick with just over 7 minutes left. Spirn's goal proved to be all Giannini needed, as it won its first ever AAA Middle School Girls Soccer title in school history 1-0 over the Panthers. Congrats to both teams on a well-played game and successful seasons! |
PRESIDIO TAKES BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
On a foggy afternoon, the Presidio Panthers took on the Giannini Jaguars in the AAA Middle School Baseball Championship game October 6 at West Sunset Field #1. The game started low-scoring, with the Panthers taking advantage of crucial defensive errors made by the defending-champion Jaguars to tack on an early run. With both teams' classmates starting to fill the bleachers in the middle innings - including an appearance by Presidio's 2022 AAA Runner-Up Softball team - Giannini made its move in the top of 6th inning to tie the game at 2 on a hit-and-run RBI single by Cooper Lewis. Presidio starting pitcher John O'Neil was able to pitch himself out of a jam, aided by a great catch in left field by sixth-grader Silas Pruitt. Just moments later, with the Panthers rolling into the top of the 7th inning at the top of their batting order, O'Neil ripped a lead-off double to left-centerfield before advancing to third base on a wild pitch. First-baseman/outfielder Isaac Starfas stepped into the batter's box and generated an RBI single to give Presidio a 3-2 lead, in what proved to be the game-winning and championship-clinching hit for the Panthers, who earned their first AAA Baseball title since the 2017-2018 season. Congrats to both teams on an exciting game and fantastic seasons. |
FRANCISCO WINS SOFTBALL TITLE
The AAA Middle School Softball Championship took place on Tuesday, October 4th at West Sunset Field #3. The Francisco Rams took on the Presidio Panthers, winning 23-16. The game started out low scoring, with both teams executing strategic fielder's choices on defense. However, Rams third baseman Jordan Rogers had a key RBI single to right field to give Francisco some breathing room, while 7th grade pitcher Jala Chi shouldered most of the work needed from the mound for Francisco. Presidio alternated pitchers mainly between starter Amanda Oberto and relievers Olivia Sanchez and Nora Marcus in key matchups at the plate, and the Panthers' bats showed signs of life in the middle and late innings. However, Francisco's defense stepped up with clutch plays when needed, especially late in the game to hold off Presidio's mounting comeback in front of a riveting crowd and win the Rams their first AAA Softball Championship since 2017. Congrats to both schools on a great game and terrific seasons. |
PRESIDIO ON TOP IN BOYS SOCCER
The AAA Middle School Boys Soccer championship was held October 3 at Beach Chalet in Golden Gate Park with Presidio besting Giannini 3-2 in overtime. The Jaguars struck first on a goal from Connor Tarte in the 16th minute. The Panthers Kevin Zhou equaled the match at 1-1 early in the second half. Neither team could produce a goal for the remainder of regulation sending the match to the first of two 10 minute overtime periods. Pedro Dias quickly put Presidio ahead in the 61st minute, however Giannini's Dylan Hunt tied the contest 2-2 on a free kick from just outside the penalty box with a minute to go. The second OT period was scoreless, and the match headed to sudden death. It took only two additional minutes for Pedro Dias to float a long kick just over the outstretched arms of Jaguars goalie Ben Elson, scoring his second and the "golden goal" for Presidio. The victory gives the Panthers their first title since winning the inaugural boys soccer championship in 1956! Congratulations to both schools on a very hard played and exciting match. |
